What changes when you choose an API instead of a framework?
With a managed API, your application creates agents, starts calls and consumes events through the platform’s interface. The provider operates the hosted runtime. You still own business rules, customer data flows, consent, prompts and the application that handles results.
With a framework, your team assembles the runtime and its deployment. That can give you deeper control over the media path and turn handling, while leaving deployment, scaling, provider integration, observability and incident response with your team. Check the specific framework and its optional managed services before deciding.
Does using a managed voice API mean changing carriers?
Not necessarily. Wixzel Voice uses a bring-your-own-SIP-trunk model: the carrier keeps the number and line, while Wixzel Voice runs the AI conversation. Keeping a carrier and choosing who operates the voice runtime are separate decisions.
For browser or mobile voice, a phone carrier is not required. Wixzel Voice offers realtime audio sessions over WebSocket; your backend creates a short-lived client secret for the app. Decide whether the product needs phone calls, in-app audio, or both before evaluating telephony features.

Where does self-hosted voice agent software fit?
Self-hosted software gives you an existing platform to operate instead of asking you to assemble every service around a framework. With the Wixzel Voice self-host license, you operate the servers and bring provider accounts. Budget the license, servers, monitoring, updates, backups, provider charges and carrier usage.
Running an application on your server does not by itself keep all audio and text on that server. If the configured speech or language models are external services, those providers process the relevant data. Trace each component’s data path when evaluating a deployment.
Which option fits your team today?
Write down the requirements that would rule an option out before comparing feature lists. These may include a specific carrier, model, language, deployment region, contractual requirement or behavior during failure. Then test the smallest representative workload.
